There’s no doubt about it – when used right and to its full potential, LinkedIn can help you reach new audiences, raise your profile and potentially generate new business. Whilst many users have a basic profile and engage every now and again, there are a few tips that can help you take your LinkedIn presence to the next level.

But first, let’s recap on the basics of your LinkedIn profile:

  1. Complete your profile until it’s got an All Star status, including city and contact details
  2. Include a professional profile picture with visibility set to public
  3. Upload a banner image, ideally this should be branded and stand out visually
  4. Create a compelling summary outlining your work successes, particular skills or projects you have worked on. This can also include future projects you’d like to collaborate on.

Here are a few tips on how to take your presence to the next level

Personalise your URL

This might be a vanity feature but it helps you get found in search engines and looks more professional. Include the URL in your email signature to encourage people to connect with you.

Publish articles

It’s easy to publish an article on LinkedIn. You may already write regular blog posts or columns on industry topics – why not publish them as LinkedIn articles as well? Use changes in legislation or current news to share your views or advice on a particular topic. Then share the articles with your network, ideally tagging individuals who you think might be interested and utilising relevant hashtags. If you’re a member of industry groups (which you should be), it’s also a good idea to share the articles to those groups, just make sure you abide by the group’s rules.

Use keywords in your summary and throughout your profile

Having relevant keywords included in the tagline, summary and throughout your profile will help your visibility and ensure you get found for your core skills and experience. Use keywords that your target audience would use to search for someone like you. If you’re not sure what those keywords are, you could use a tool such as Google Keyword Planner for suggestions.

Embed different media

Make your profile page as interesting as possible by including different media such as documents, images, slide decks, video or audio in your profile. Refer to these in the summary to encourage the reader to scroll down the page.

Clean up your newsfeed

Did you know you can customise your newsfeed to only see updates you are interested in? By clicking on the three small dots in the right-hand corner you can ‘hide a post’, and you can unfollow someone’s activities whilst still staying connected to them. Over time the LinkedIn algorithm will ‘learn’ what content you do and don’t want to see so it’s worth the effort.

Create a list of individuals you want to focus on to build relationships with

As with all social media platforms, there’s a lot of ‘noise’ out there. Chances are that out of all your LinkedIn connections there is only a small number you actually want to focus on and develop meaningful relationships with. Create a list of those individuals and make a concerted effort to read their content, comment constructively and share your knowledge.

Rearrange your profile

You can re-arrange the different sections of your profile to show the most relevant ones at the top. So, if you’ve recently completed a course or an award-winning project, you can move these sections to the top of your profile, ensuring that visitors to your page will see these highlights straight away.

The ‘Who viewed your profile’ feature is a useful tool. Monitor who has visited your profile and reach out to those individuals to start a conversation.
