If you are a seasoned LinkedIn user then you have probably heard of the Social Selling Index (often referred to as SSI).

This is LinkedIn’s own league table. It can give you an insight into how your profile is performing against your peers in your industry as well as your connections.

Having undertaken some research recently it does appear to, on occasion, do some strange things… For example, my SSI score has dropped from 82 to 73 in the last few months and yet my engagement and ‘results’ from LinkedIn have been the best to date!

From speaking to LinkedIn ‘experts’ it seems it should be taken as part of a wider picture and is good to look at when your SSI is low (below 45) as it is easier to make improvements at that level.

What your SSI also shows you are the 4 pillars of what it sees as a good profile. (see image below):

  • Establish your professional brand
Complete your profile with the customer in mind. Become a thought-leader by publishing meaningful posts.
  • Find the right people
Identify better prospects in less time using efficient search and research tools. Reach out to them with customised and personal messages.
  • Engage with insights
Discover and share conversation-worthy updates to create and grow relationships. Post content regularly, and share high-quality content that you think your audience will find insightful and interesting.
  • Build relationships
Strengthen your network by finding and establishing trust with decision-makers and industry influencers.

So, checking in to see what your SSI is today and probably once a month is a good piece of housekeeping. Don’t obsess over it. Here are the 4 actions you need to take that align with the 4 pillars.

  1. Post meaningful/insightful posts
  2. Use the search function to find and connect with the right people for you and your business.
  3. Comment and like the posts that your connections share – get involved and engage!
  4. Don’t stop engaging, connecting, and developing relationships with your new connections.

Other numbers on your LinkedIn profile to be aware of are in the below image and are more relevant on a day-to-day basis and likely to lead to results:
